Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Welcome to the Halloween edition of Virtual Voices. Thanks to Cathy Elderkin for recording with me and to Bill Millett for recording and editing every edition and for photographing and presenting some scary photos of a fabulous neighbourhood Halloween display with a Mount Royal connection.

Some of you might recognize some of these ghoulish figures. If you have driven by Lee Wilson's home in the Old West End of Moncton over the past 21 years you have no doubt have gasped in fright but smiled in delight at all the work that has gone into their Halloween display. Do you know Lee? She sings in the choir and entertains us magically while playing the flute.

I asked Lee about the Halloween displays over the years this past week. She said it started with a first witch and became a joint effort with her brother's household. She gave a lot of credit to her sister in law. Many years they invited people to stop and view it and leave a donation, if desired, for the food bank. Lee said they scaled back 3 or 4 years ago and had stopped collecting for the food bank. They wondered this year whether they should even do one with concerns about keeping their at-risk family members safe with Covid 19. As Lee said "We finally decided that people need some light-hearted fun more than ever this year so decided to put it up without the display inside the porch and ask people to stay on the sidewalk for this year. There have been lots of smiles - that's why we keep doing it."

Thank you to the Wilsons and the Griffiths for giving lots of entertainment over the past 21 plus years.

I also want to thank Terry Foreman for running the grocery gift card sale. We made $500 and Terry hopes to squeeze in one more before Christmas.

When Virtual Voices was recorded this week, I announced a very exciting new total just as we wrap up the campaign. I may have been a little over exuberant and I'll confirm if the number I provided was incorrect. Regardless, on behalf of Council, we are very pleased with your generous donations and know everyone is benefiting from the improved technology.

This week's edition also includes a clip about the new online Sunday School program, Ukulele Church, that our BLAST children, ages 3 and up are invited to join. Please contact Caroline Gingles at 506-388-1467 or email at blast@mountroyaluc.ca if you have questions or to register your children.

A couple of last announcement reminders:

Sunday, we celebrate All Saints and light candles in memory of dear Mount Royal family members who died this past year. Join us online or in person for worship by registering online by Sat at 5PM  (CLICK HERE) or by calling the office by Friday at 1 PM.

And don't forget, clocks fall back 1-hour Saturday at midnight so you get to sleep in if you are lucky.

Be well everyone. Have a happy and safe Halloween.

Please enjoy these really cool pictures taken by Bill Millett in front of Lee Wilson's house. Why not drive or walk by so you can appreciate all the effort at decorating this Halloween.
