Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Thursday was an interesting day for people living in Moncton in the area around Centennial Park. An emergency active alert sounded about 10:15 AM advising residents in that area to stay home, lock their doors and stay away from their windows after gun shots were fired. Memories of the June 2014 shootings of RCMP officers and the mass murders a year ago in Portapique, N.S. had many people on edge.

Oddly, a backyard neighbour worked away steadily in his garden either ignoring or oblivious to the warnings to stay inside. He was in his happy place, digging in his garden, pulling weeds and edging his beds. It made me think of the healing power of nature and how losing yourself in the outdoors can bring you a great sense of peace. Where is your happy place; you know the thing you do that helps you forget all the stresses of the day? Is it walking in the woods, or looking at a flower close up? Does lightning in the sky or the fresh smell of the air after a rainfall make you smile? Do you lose your worries listening to the waves crashing against the shore or sitting on the doorstep rubbing your dog's ears knowing he loves you unconditionally?

This week Sarah Gingles will join Rev Stuart for worship and they will talk about creation, the Earth and how we can be protecting our planet. Please be sure to join us.

Sarah has recorded a presentation, an Environmental Conversation, which you can watch on the church website. And next week she will join Virtual Voices to chat a bit more about things we can do to take care of our communities and the world. If you have any questions for Sarah, please send them to newsletters@mountroyaluc.ca by Tuesday, May 18th. I'll pass them along to Sarah and she will answer them during next week's Virtual Voices.

Stay safe and remember to do the thing in nature that brings you peace.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
