Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Hope you are well this week.

A few weeks ago, someone said during a discussion that Mount Royal should consider developing a community garden. "Do we have enough land space to give up?" was the question. A big part of our property, apart from the land where the building sits, is parking lot. We don't really have a huge excess of land was the conclusion.

I thought of this when Rev. Stuart called me this past Wednesday. He wanted to let me know that the Principal of Bessborough School, Nick Mattatall, had posted pictures on his Facebook page of the items the school bought for their Community Garden with the money Mount Royal had given them last May. Council had made the decision to donate $600 to the school where our roots began (we used to meet in the school gymnasium as the church was under construction) in recognition of our 63rd Anniversary. The school suggested our donation could be put towards their revamped green space; a place that students and staff, visitors, in fact, the whole Community, could enjoy. You can see photos of what they purchased with our donation at the end of this week's announcements.

Here is Principal Mattatall's Facebook post which accompanied the pictures of the plants:

"The sense of community is probably the strongest trait of Moncton's West End! A huge thank you to Rev. Stuart and Mount Royal United Church for adding to our community garden at Bessborough School. Thanks to your generosity we were able to add 4 Gooseberry, 2 Haskaps and 16 high bush blueberry plants. Your gift to celebrate your 60th (sic) anniversary will be greatly appreciated by our school community. A big thank you to Farmer Brown's Greenhouse for the beautiful plants!"

Isn't it great that Mount Royal is a part of a Community Garden; something identified by some as one indication of a thriving church; a caring Community of Faith! This is a space within our city block which can be accessed and cared for by anyone. Drop by if you are out for a walk and have a peak at Bessborough School's Community Garden space. And maybe take the opportunity to water the plants or pull some weeds as you pass by.

Have a good week. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
