Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Even though I didn't go back to school in a formal way this week, I do have training scheduled for a couple of different organizations I volunteer to assist. I found myself thinking about my daughters and how much they loved all the back-to-school activities. Clothes shopping was least interesting to them, a necessary evil after summer growth spurts. They were more excited to get two pairs of sneakers, new backpacks, and lunch pails. What they loved most, though, was choosing school supplies from the teacher provided list and pouring everything out on the floor at home to label the duo tangs and campfire notebooks, the math sets, pencil crayons or markers and occasionally a new calculator. They would go to bed with their school bags at the ready while I often was at Bessborough School polishing apples and setting one out, along with a pencil, on the desk of each child and teacher.

Aren't we so very lucky to live at a time when we have so many options to acquire knowledge: podcasts and audio or paper books, online or in person classes, discussion groups, community forums or even the just googling a question or watching a "how to..." YouTube video? Maybe you are lucky to have a family member or good friend to help you from time to time.

There are plenty of suggestions for learning in this week's announcements. Be sure to check them all out.

Please see the websites for the Region:

and the United Church of Canada's United in Learning webinars:

As well there is information on the church website (Click Here) about a discussion group on Indigenous Peoples, the legacy of residential schools and reconciliation. Please contact Debbie Maund at dmaund@mountroyaluc.ca for details and to express an interest.

And Rev Scott will be hosting another movie night on September 28th for viewing "Evan Almighty". The details are on the website as they become available. Click Here

We are looking for people to volunteer to help with a lesson or a block of time for Sunday School. Covid 19 precautions permitting, we hope to see the children back for BLAST sometime this fall. We are very thankful that Rev Catherine Stuart has offered to assist with training and ideas. If you can help, please advise Tracy in the office: office@mountroyaluc.ca or by phone at 855-5771.

Rev. Stuart's message this week is entitled "Today's Discipleship". Please join us in person or online.

Stay well. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any suggestions or questions.
