Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

I listened to a Mt Allison President's Speakers Series presentation with Dr. David Suzuki on Thursday evening. Not surprisingly, he was talking about climate change. Whether you are a climate change activist, a denier or, like me, accepting it as a reality and trying to incorporate small changes in my lifestyle every day, you must admit that man is passionate.

He talked about a lot of things; politicians putting the economy ahead of our climate health and climate conferences, like cop26, setting targets for reducing carbon emissions that are never met.  He also spoke about how we are beyond the ability of technology to fix the destruction of the planet and that only the will and passion of people will make a difference.

One thing that really caught my attention was when Dr. Suzuki shared that he is an atheist and said that Christianity is an anthropocentric religion that could be blamed for the state of our environment. He quoted from Genesis 1:26-28. Here are those verses from the New International Version.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
    male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Then an attendee of the presentation stepped to the microphone and said she was a Christian and asked how she could reconcile her beliefs with climate change. He replied that Christians can be good stewards of the land. And that is consistent with what the United Church calls us to do. Regardless of your feelings about the existence of climate change, none of us can deny we should take care of our planet.

Please join us for worship this week. It is Reign of Christ Sunday and while Rev Stuart is on study leave, Rev Danny Compton is the presider for this week's service.

The COVID circuit breaker restrictions are being lifted. We have several special services planned during Advent. I hope you will join us; in person if you are able or online if that is where you feel most comfortable, or it works with your schedule and interest. Please watch your email for news from the church as weather and COVID restrictions may change can how some upcoming activities take place.

Stay well and please contact me if you have any comments or questions.
