A quick reminder that our Sunday Service is live streamed from the sanctuary  beginning at 10:30 AM and can also be watched later on the church website. The Prelude will begin at 10:15 AM with music and the announcement slides before the service begins with Rev. Stuart.

Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Hello Everyone and welcome to the July 22 edition of Virtual Voices for Mount Royal United Church. I hope this finds you well.

Seems a lot of people have been feeling ill the past couple of weeks; not all with Covid but with similar symptoms. I am trying to keep wearing my mask when I go out but it is tiresome and hot. I have gone from being totally conscientious to inconsistent at best. I do want to try to minimize the effects of the next wave but I am sure I am not alone when I say it is harder all the time. There isn’t a mandatory requirement, but Public Health is encouraging hospital personnel to wear masks and set a good example.

The announcements are pretty much the same as the past few weeks. Tai Chi with Stephen is still happening Sat. AM to my knowledge. I guess the group that attends communicates directly with Stephen. If you are new and would like to join, contact Tracy in the office please and she can confirm whether the Sat AM group will meet.

And the award for most faithful year round gatherers definitely goes to the Tues AM Craft Group. They will meet outside, weather permitting, on the lawn next to the Bessborough Avenue parking lot or inside if the weather is inclement.

As with the previous weeks, watch for Rev. Stuart’s weekly devotional. If a current one is unavailable, you can watch one from a previous week on the church website

Send your questions to Rev. Stuart for the “I Wonder” box. Last week we had a good from Ethan, one of our younger members of the Community of Faith. No matter your age or stage in life, I am sure there are questions about the church, how we practice our faith or what is meant by a scripture or passage from the bible. Send your questions to minister@mountroyaluc.ca

There is an article up on the website with details for movie night – 7 PM July 29th. Plan to join others in the social hall for a good movie, Julie and Julia, and a comfortable place to enjoy some fellowship, popcorn, and refreshments. Email cdc@mountroyaluc.ca if you plan to attend.

If you want to participate in a fall study on the book “Forgiving Yourself” Rev. Stuart says the book would make a nice summer read. You can contact him if you are having trouble locating the book.

Don’t forget that we’ll be having an Open House, Covid numbers permitting, on September 18th right after the service. Plan to welcome people from the neighbourhood and surrounding area for anyone wondering what we are all about.

I am sure you have noticed how long it has been since the children were attending church. We are really hoping to change that come September. We need a few adult volunteers willing to fit in to a rotation of volunteers. Can you help, please? Please give your name to Tracy in the office or contact Karen at cdc@mountroyaluc.ca

Here is one more big ask. Our long serving, dedicated office administrator, Tracy Parrott, is retiring the end of September. We know her shoes will be big ones to fill. Tracy does a variety of tasks, far beyond note taking and answering everyone’s questions. She prepares the screens for music, manages our rental agreements, comes up with the great graphics you see on the screen announcements. We are just starting into the staffing process. Do you have some hiring experience that you can share with the church? I know its vacation time but we all need to offer our talents so we can find a pool of great candidates for the office administrator position. Please contact the Chair of Ministry and Personnel, Debbie Maund, by July 29th, if you can help in any way with this selection process. And if you think you know of an ideal candidate, please contact Debbie immediately. You can reach out to her, via email at mandp@montroyaluc.ca

Here are some details about our upcoming worship service: Caroline Gingles will read scripture from Luke 11:1-13. Rev. Stuart’s message is entitled “In Silence We Pray” and Charlie Munroe accompanies France on trumpet with ‘Softly and Tenderly” for the anthem. We always enjoy hearing Charlie.

We have a few birthday celebrations to announce: Joyce Bremner on Monday and Howard Easton on Tues. Now I won’t share his age but let me simply say I am inspired every time I see Howard out riding his bicycle and he does so faithfully. Happy Birthday as well to Nadine Nicholson and Abbie Gingles this month. To anyone else out there celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion, our very best wishes from your Mount Royal family. Please send your messages about special occasions to Tracy in the office at office@mountroyaluc.ca

Finally, I had a request to do a plug for Mosaiq Cultural Festival downtown on the waterfront. There will be great food and beautiful costumes and fabulous entertainment. Check the Mosaiq Facebook page for details. Its happening Friday and Saturday. What better way to get to know your neighbours.

We have a slight change in office hours to announce for this upcoming week:
Tracy will be in the office on Monday for 11AM -2PM, and then 9 AM to 12 PM Tues -Thursday. This week only.

Thank you for your support. Please consider a monthly donation to cover your weekly contributions while we are closed to in-person worship during August.

That’s all for this week. Stay well. And please contact me if you have any questions or comments.
