Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Hi and welcome to Virtual Voices. Here are the announcements for Mount Royal United Church, Moncton for the week beginning September 16th. Trust this finds you well.

Boy it was great to get some rain on Wednesday. The ground is so hard and dry. Can you imagine living somewhere that goes without rain for months on end? I am looking forward to cooler weather and lots more rain before winter. The leaves are turning already…

Plenty of changes this month. Whether you are a huge fan of the monarchy or not, it is hard not to appreciate the lifetime of service given by Queen Elizabeth ll. I have enjoyed seeing pictures and hearing memories of local people who met her during visits to NB. Do you have a memory to share?

While government offices and schools in NB will be closed, the church office will be open on September 19th as we welcome Emily Smith, our new Office Administrator, to her position. Tracy will be busy training Emily who we look forward to meeting and welcoming to Mount Royal. Beginning the 19th, office hours will be Monday to Friday 9AM-2PM.

We are going to celebrate Tracy’s retirement during coffee and conversation following the September 25th service. Let’s have a great turnout that day to wish her well. Tracy will have her last day on September 29th as the office will be closed on the 30th to recognize The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

You can find information about why we recognize that day on the United Church website.

There are several suggested activities for that week. Why not wear an orange shirt or something orange when you come to church on the 25th.

The big news this week is our Community Fun Day on Sunday, September 18th. It’s a combination of Welcome Back to Church and Nice to Meet You with hopefully lots of folks from the neighbourhood dropping in to see what goes on at 106 Mt Royal Blvd. Activities are scheduled to begin at 11:30 but the service this week is shorter than usual so you will be free to wander about outside, weather permitting.  Bring your sunhat! Stick around to check out the displays, shop at the Craft Group and Art Club tables, register your children for our Sunday Youth Program and chat with representatives of the many groups that meet at Mt Royal. Want to know what those things are hanging from the guy wires in the sanctuary or try out a teleprompter? Stop into the sanctuary to talk to a member of the Tech Team. We’ll have face painting, sidewalk chalking, bubbles galore and something called a Safari Bouncer for the kids to climb on. I can’t wait to see that thing inflated. And the 1st Jones Lake Scouting will hold their moving up ceremony during the open house so the participants and parents will be there. Grab a hot dog and beverage and check things out. It should be a wonderful, welcoming celebration!

The 1st Jones Lake Scouting folks are having a bottle drive and collecting recyclable bottles and cans. They don’t ring your doorbell so please have your recyclables on your doorstep or in the driveway by 9AM. If you received an information slip in your mail, please attach it to your bag of recyclables. And a huge thanks to the Scouters who delivered our Community Fun Day flyers along with their bottle drive information. That was very much appreciated. Thanks too to Tracy for printing and cutting all those notices.

Speaking of things to celebrate, here are the upcoming birthdays: Marv Ritcey, Bob Gordon, Shirley Dutcher on the 22nd and Maureen Linney. Best wishes to all these folks and anyone else celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion this week.

You have been asking and we now have a date and fingers crossed. We haven’t had a rummage sale during COVID, but we are planning one for Oct 21 5:30-8:00PM and Oct 22 8:00 -11:00. Tell everyone about it and start making your piles of items to drop off. You can contact Terry Foreman for pick up. Details to follow.
Next Sunday we will have the Blessing of the Backpacks so bring yours along for the 25th.

The drive to raise funds for the roof replacement is officially underway. Please donate if you are able. All donations must be clearly marked “roof fund” and have your name and envelope number, if applicable, included. You can drop your donation in the offering plate, stop by the office or make it online through the church website. Thank you for your support.

I am reading scripture this week. Luke 16: 1-13. At the time of writing, I don’t have details about the anthem or sermon. Please join us in person, if possible, or online for this week’s service.

That’s about all the information, I have to pass along for this week. Group gatherings are back at their regular times. Choir is resuming and looking for members; especially male voices.  Please contact France at music@mountroyaluc.ca for details.

I hope to see you on Sunday. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions.
