Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

We’ve all heard the expression “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. In other words, what no longer holds value for one person may be very useful to someone else. And that is what we count on when its rummage sale weekend at the church. We asked you to drop off your gently used items and then hope lots of people show up and see a way to repurpose your donations. Just like Rev. Stuart spoke to the children about being good Earth stewards during last week’s worship service, rummage sales help us all to play a part in the 3Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle. Its great to keep things out of the landfill by passing them along for someone else to use.

I used to say my Mom came from a long line of environmentalists. Her Dad was a lighthouse keeper. While they didn’t always live on an Island and have to wait for supplies to be delivered by boat, certain things they needed for the light station weren’t readily available. Like many people born between the First and Second World Wars, they grew their own vegetables, kept them in cold storage, raised chickens and had a cow or two. They sewed their own clothes and knit and later darned their socks. They hooked rugs from strips of wool clothing. Saw blades and axes were sharpened not replaced and, of course, kerosene lamps were refilled daily. They bought only the basics and reused and repurposed as much as possible.

My Mom was totally opposed to the use of paper towels her whole life. I think of her every time I grab one rather than for an old rag I could use for clean up. She would be proud of my oldest daughter who started shopping with a basket while she was still in school, washes out her plastic bags and happily accepts hand me down clothing from friends and colleagues. I have to hunt for paper towels and freezer bags when I visit Amy and her husband in Calgary.

We could all learn a bit by seeing how people are willing to recycle and reuse items. I sometimes think taking care of the environment skipped a generation. It is downright annoying to see how many items are manufactured to last for a limited time.

I hope you have enjoyed the series of worship services on creation this past month. If you missed any, you can watch them in the video archives on the church website.

Please join us this week for the 4th and final service on this theme. We would love to see you in person and of course, you are welcome in person and online.

And if you can, pop over to the social hall and check out the rummage sale. Your help cleaning up and delivering any remaining items to other charities when the sale is over on Sat morning, would be appreciated.

If you have any comments or questions, please contact me.
