Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Wow, Advent is here. Sunday the 27th is the first Sunday in Advent. The period of waiting and expectation. Remember that Carly Simon song “Anticipation”? The lyric was “anticipation is making me wait…” I guess it could mean a lot of things taken away from the rest of the lyrics in her song. But that one word is a good one for Advent.

The Christmas letters go out this week. They look lovely. Thanks to Emily and all those who provided information. Invariably we go to print and something needs a change. For one, we have moved the Blue Christmas service on December 21st to 7 PM from 6:30. Please make that change on the schedule when you receive your letter.

It was a busy fall. Suddenly, I was asked whether we wanted an outside tree with lights. The letter was printed before we remembered we usually invite people to dedicate a bulb on the memorial tree in memory of a loved one, to say thanks for a kindness, to honour a much appreciated employee or volunteer or friend. If you would like to dedicate a bulb, please send the information to Emily in the church office. You can reach her at 506 855-5771 or office@mountroyaluc.ca

If you care to make a donation to accompany your dedication, $5.00 is a suggested amount but any amount would be appreciated. Send you money by cheque or cash to the office or e-transfer to: etransfer@mountroyaluc.ca.  Be sure to indicate the funds are for memorial tree light dedications.

I saw some hat and mitt sets in the boardroom when I was there for a meeting the other night -a sure sign that Advent is here. How appreciative the recipients are going to be when they feel all snug and cozy in them. Thanks to those donors. In the coming weeks we will be collecting items for those less fortunate in our community. Listen to Virtual Voices for the list of items we are requesting.

We are going to have a carol sing before worship on Sunday mornings during Advent; just like pre-Covid. Cathy will be leading us with France and perhaps others doing the accompaniment. It has always been a favourite part of the Christmas season for some people.

And after asking him a few weeks, Nick Smith was available to record Virtual Voices and as requested, brought along his Grandfather’s Silver Jubilee medal presented by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 and the Platinum Jubilee medal he just received earlier this month from Lt Gov of NB, Brenda Murphy. How special for two generations of the same family. And you know the other special thing for our Community of Faith? Courtney Donovan also received one the very same presentation evening. Here’s a picture of Courtney and Nick with their Q.E.II Platinum Jubilee medals taken the night of their presentation.

There’s lots happening at Mt Royal in the coming weeks. I do hope you will participate fully in person and online.

As always, I appreciate hearing your questions and concerns.
