Message from the Chair of Council - Susan Fowler

Hi and welcome to the announcements for Mt Royal United Church, Moncton, for the week beginning March 3rd. I hope this finds you all well.

Right off I’ll mention that Rev Stuart is on vacation until March 13th. We wish him a restful and fun-filled holiday with all the plans his son, Ethan, has lined up for them. Sounds like they will be keeping busy. And the office will be closed March 6th for the day. Emily will be back in the office on Tues the 7th.

As pulpit supply, we welcome Rev. Dr. Beverly Daley back to Mt. Royal, on March 5th and 12th. Lots of folks will be pleased to see her. It would be nice to have a good crowd to say hello. Her message for the 5th is entitled “Journey through Change”. Karen Hudson will be the scripture reader and the lessons will be from Genesis 12:1-4a and John 3:1-17. The anthem for Sunday will be “Just As I Am” played by France and Charlie Munroe. The screen operator will be Elizabeth; Bill will be on sound and camera/livestream and the greeters will be Eleanor and Ensor.

Weekday activities include Tai Chi Monday, Wednesday and Friday with Valerie, Tuesday AM Craft Group, Wednesday evening Choir practice at 7PM, and bridge on Thurs afternoon. And Happy International Women’s on March 8th.

The following week is a busy one:

You might also be interested in a beautiful concert by Chorale Louisbourg, to be held in the sanctuary at Mt Royal at 7PM on March 12th. This is a very talented group that you would thoroughly enjoy hearing. I don’t have information about the cost but we will pass that along as available.

March 13th: The Pastoral Care Committee will meet at 11:30 and Worship Committee at 7PM;
March 14th - UCW’s March meeting takes place at 11:30, followed by the Lenten Study Group at 1:30 and Council is tentatively scheduled to meet at 7PM.
All meetings will be in the boardroom.
March 16th – is the next Lunch with Friends. Details on lunch and a possible theme to follow.

And of course we are still planning our Annual Meeting to be held upstairs in the sanctuary, beginning during worship, on March 19th with a storm date of the 26th. In an effort to save trees and postage, the reports will probably be sent electronically to everyone for whom we have an email address and a limited number of paper copies will be available at the back of the sanctuary on March 19th. If you want or need a paper copy of the report, please contact Emily in the office. office@mountroyaluc.ca

When you receive your annual report, you will see that it contains the recommendations from the Ad Hoc Visioning Committee. There is a lot to digest there. The decision was made to dedicate a special session for the Community of Faith to discuss the recommendations. That date will be coming up in early May. Please plan to take part in these very important conversations about the future of Mt. Royal.

Know a young person at Mt. Royal between grades 6-12 that might like to attend a youth event during the Regional Annual Meeting in Charlottetown? The meetings take place May 26-28 at UPEI. For more information, contact Catherine Stuart at cstuart@united-church.ca.

And would you be interested in attending 2 evenings of meetings by Zoom to learn about and share what the research tells us about thriving churches? Turning Ourselves Inside Out: Thriving Christian Communities will be offered by two pastor - scholars willing to share what they have learned about churches thriving post COVID. The sessions are April 17th and 24th at 8PM ADT. For more information, contact Emily in the office, speak to Marlene MacLeod or send me an email please. I would love to see several people willing to participate and then have a follow-up conversation on what that might mean for Mt. Royal.

We have birthday celebrations this week. Best wishes to Alyre Gaudet and Craig Townsend and to anyone else celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion.

We continue to accept donations of non-perishable food items for the Peter McKee Food Bank. Please leave your donation in the wooden bin at the Bessborough door. Thanks to Jan for delivering our donations.

And the UCW continues to collect used eyewear. See the pink box at the Bessborough door if you have donations to leave.

Thanks for your ongoing support. Please feel free to email me if you have questions or concerns.

If you are a teacher, assistant, student or even a parent of a school aged child, have a wonderful March break.

Finally, you may recall the first Friday of March is always World Day of Prayer. This year, around the World, people will celebrate on March 3rd. The theme is based on Ephesians 1:15-19 (the letter sent to a community of faith to express gratitude. Check out this link for details of the 2023 service coming from Taiwan and to watch the service.

This year’s WDP artwork was created by a young woman, Hui-Wen Hsiao, who said the orchids and animals and birds reminded her of her childhood in Taiwan.

Stay well.
